Starting this year, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is changing the permit system for the Dental Amalgam Reduction Program. Instead of each dental office applying for individual Wastewater Discharge Permits, the SFPUC has granted a General Wastewater Discharge Permit to all dental practices in San Francisco.
Dental offices are still required to follow Mandatory Best Management Practices as established by the SFPUC, and all dental practices are required to install a city approved amalgam separator if they place or remove amalgam fillings. An exemption is granted by the SFPUC to dental practices that place or remove amalgam fillings three (3) days or less in one calendar year.
More information on the San Francisco Dental Amalgam Reduction Program can be found on the Public Utilities Commission’s website, under the subheading 'Pretreatment Program', in the 'Sewer' section of their 'About Us' page.
