Join with the SFDS to welcome Benjamin Chaffee, DDS, MPH, PhD, to discuss a timely topic: new and emerging tobacco products and what they mean for the dental team.

Important takeaways will include:

  • Recognizing current trends in use of new and emerging tobacco and nicotine products, as well as cannabis
  • Understanding oral and overall health implications of e-cigarettes (vaping), cannabis, and conventional tobacco products
  • Gaining confidence and learning strategies for communicating with patients about tobacco
  • Learning how to connect tobacco-using patients with local, low-cost, evidence-based cessation assistance
  • Reviewing roles for all members of the dental team in promoting a healthy, tobacco-free practice

Benjamin Chaffee, DDS, MPH, PhD, is an associate professor in the Division of Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health at the University of California San Francisco. He has authored more than 70 publications on topics including tobacco use, children’s oral health, caries risk assessment, and research methods. Dr. Chaffee is affiliated with the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research & Education, Global Health Sciences Institute, the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center to Address Disparities in Children's Oral Health. He serves as Director of the UCSF School of Dentistry Program in Global Oral Health.
